Fender American Telecaster And Stratocaster Review
The Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster are two of the most best-selling guitars in the world, and are always Fender’s top-selling guitars. That’s a reasonably big deal, seeing how many world-class products bear the name of the late, great Leo Fender. Though Leo is no longer with us, the most recent embodiments of the American-made Strat and Tele would make him proud. They incorporate the best of innovative ideas fused with classic Fender designs.
In recent years, Fender desired input from working musicians about how Fender could improve its already well-built instruments. This emphasis on continued design in light of the desires of serious musicians is the spirit that Fender is built upon.
Luckily, the folks at Fender were wise enough to assume an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. Take the Stratocaster, for example. They retained the four-bolt neck, the Micro-Tilt, two-point vibrato, 9.5″ radius, 22 frets, and DeltaTone circuit that had become welcome features in their recent instruments. What changes did Fender make to the iconic Stratocaster, then?
Thankfully, they changed the paint job so that the new Stratocaster has a thinner undercoat. This decision allows the tone to resonate more open and freely and results in a much less “choked” sound. The neck also has a smooth satin finish on the back, which facilitates faster playing. The front of the neck, though, has a gloss finish, a much nicer look.
The bridge is also a sophisticated design that incorporates elements from both vintage and modern Strat designs. The higher mass bridge design is a welcome addition, since many guitar players often upgraded their bridges on previous models to improve their guitar’s tone.
The new design also includes vintage-style bent steel saddles, which aid in catching the classic vintage Strat tone. From Buddy Holly to Jimi Hendrix, it’s all here.
Though you likely won’t want to do any major over-the-top whammy activity, the standard Fender system actually does keep its tuning rather well. We had to do some serious dive bombs to get it to go out of tune.
The Telecaster includes the same upgrades as its Stratocaster brethren, including a redesigned bridge that also has vintage-style bent steel adjustable saddles. The steel saddles coupled with a brass plate helps achieve that textbook Telecaster tone.
Both instruments include a world-class TSA lock-equipped SKB case that makes airport travel a picnic, and the case is very well-designed and could take quite a punch, we bet.
Both the Strat and the Tele has street prices less than $1,200 which makes both of them quite a bargain. If you want the best of both vintage and modern-day Fender guitars, you can’t go wrong with the redesigned American series.
